A friend of the Mrs. is starting to look for a new ride and is wondering what not consumer reports resources she should use as she starts her search. I don’t have a clue as to what she is looking for just that she is not an enthusiast.

While Consumer Reports has their place, the one I rely on most is probably Edmunds. That way you can read consumer reviews about the vehicle and see what people have to say, both the good and the bad. Another good idea would be internet forums devoted to the specific vehicle. I know many vehicle-specific forums will have a “What do you hate” thread about the vehicle where people can voice the things they don't like. It's good to read those to see if there's something glaring that might be a dealbreaker for her (like rearward visibility being lousy, for instance).

what is going to be used for
what does she want in it
how much is she willing to spend
given its a non-car person, just point her to a Honda accord (or subaru impreza if she *needs* AWD) and call it a day

Why not CR? But honestly, get a CR-V. They’re great cars; my mom got one, and though I haven’t spent much time in it (neither has mom; 1.5 weeks and only 200 miles on the odometer), it’s comfy, has nice features, Honda’s reputation, and is an incredible value.

Seconded. You’ll get the unvarnished truth in owner forums, because everybody likes to bitch about something.

I think CR is a solid start. I’d throw in various reviews (if available) in the buff books/sites especially if they are of the comparison variety. She might also check Edmunds, truedelta, MSN, etc. An enthusiast would also usually check forums to see what the problem areas are for the car they are interested in but I don’t know if that would be applicable in her case.

Because they are often kind of stupid. They said recent Fords were “unreliable” because they couldn’t figure out Sync.

A friend of the Mrs. is starting to look for a new ride and is wondering what not consumer reports resources she should use as she starts her search.
A few options, as this sentence confuses me.
I think you meant this:
A friend of the Mrs. is starting to look for a new ride and is wondering what, not consumer reports, resources she should use as she starts her search.
But even though they are slated towards enthusiasts, MotorTrend and Car&Driver , and Road & Track are solid places to start. They generally clearly state, in each article, that they more often than not choose an enthusiast orientated vehicle. Reading the article will point out the highlights and strengths of each vehicle. If they say it rolls and floats too much, she might find that quality beneficial.
Just because they cater to spirited driving doesn’t mean they aren’t good resources for non-enthusiasts.

lemon-aid is the canadian answer, phil edmonston has been writing them for like 30 years, and in broad generalities speaks the truth. He’s a buddy of Ralph Nader so there’s that. He’s our polite canadian nader

You can buy a Consumer Reports Annual Auto issue at Barnes and Noble. Those things are the best.

IIHS to look at safety and repair costs and JD Power for reliability surveys. If looking at used cars, carcompliants.com lists owner reported problems.

You are correct in your interpretation, auto correct and trying to compose on my phone led to bad phrasing.

Oppositelock is a good resource as long as she's looking at a Miata, something unreliable, or something impractical.
